Artist Statement

I grew up in Pennsylvania and attended the University of the Arts (then Philadelphia College of Art) where I earned a BFA in Painting and Drawing. I earned an MFA in Painting and Drawing in 1986 from Pennsylvania State University. Since 1987 until I retired, I was on the faculty at Penn State York and taught a variety of art including Art Appreciation, Drawing, Design, and Painting.

Most of my paintings are tied to my immediate surroundings and the subjects and shapes are derived from direct observation, from memories, and from miscellaneous paraphernalia as a departure point. I am currently working on a series of local landscapes and a series of interior still life paintings using my studio as the subject.

My work has been exhibited in international, national, and regional exhibits. In 2016, I had a one-person exhibit, hosted by the Susquehanna Art Museum (SAM): “Ten Years of Painting by Fred Haag.”  This exhibit displayed seventeen of my paintings. More recently, one painting, Treasures Shed & Found 2019, was accepted into “that Dang, Mod, Durn art!”, the Western National Juried Exhibition at Dallas Metro Arts Contemporary in August 2020. In 2025, The Art of the State Museum show accepted my painting December Studio, and my painting, Spring Doesn’t Care if You’re Ready or Not, was accepted into and won Best in Show in Creative York’s 2025 Adult Juried Art Exhibition. In addition to solo and juried exhibits, my work has been in over twenty invitational exhibitions in the area.

During the process of painting, I often find myself engaged with certain aspects of space and surface. I like to see the push and pull of depth and surface unfold through patterns, brushwork, color, and draftsmanship.
